WASHINGTON, D.C.In her capacity as Chairman of the Board of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright will visit Azerbaijan this week. Albright's visit will take place at a time of heightened international interest in Azerbaijan, in light of the November 2005 parliamentary elections. She will travel with Patrick Merloe, NDI's Senior Associate and Director of Electoral Programs. During her visit, Albright will meet with government officials, civil society and political party leaders, journalists and representatives of the international community to discuss Azerbaijan's electoral process prior to the commencement of election campaigning in the country. The National Democratic Institute has worked in Azerbaijan since 1995 to advance the development of civic groups and political parties. NDI's Azerbaijan programs are supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.
