Important Tips, Tricks, and Guidelines
- All country pages require an image in order for anchor links to work correctly. "TEAMS" and "NDIPicturesArchive" in K drive are possible sources for acceptable images.
- When adding links to pages within the site, omit www.ndi.org from the address
- Be careful porting text into Drupal. Use Notepad or Dreamweaver as an intermediary for text coming from Word or other programs which may have hidden style tags. Dreamweaver is also helpful to use as a workspace for HTML editing that proves cumbersome in Drupal.
- For the most part, email addresses are only listed on the Field Offices page. When adding email addresses to the site, first mask them from spam-bots using:
http://www.addressmunger.com/ - Anchors must be entered as: /country name#anchor name. For example:/burma#ContactInformation
- When you come to a page with a url like "/content/civic_organizations", deleting "/content" will take you to a page that you can edit.
- Vijai has a page on the wiki that notes what has been customized on the site for use when we upgrade Drupal
- When adding articles to the homepage, put only the relative date in the teaser (e.g. "Last week"). After the article has been up for a week, change this to the absolute date.
Paginating Long Entries
Entries that take up more than a few screens should be paginated. Paginating an entry can interfere with anchor links that lead to pages after the break. To paginate an entry:
1. Add page breaks as appropriate
2. Check for anchor links leading to pages after the break, and correct them using the following structure:
/PAGENAME?page=0%C1#ANCHORNAME
IE:
/bolivia?page=0%2C1#ContactInformation
Where C1 represents the first page after the break. For page 3, you would use C2, for 2 pages after the break, and so on.
Back-dating articles
To add a new article without bumping it to the front page, we have several "Test" nodes with older creation dates. To find a test node, go into the admin options and sort content by “not published.” The field should become narrow enough to find one by sight. Alter the empty node as needed. Make sure to create a replacement test node when you finish, as only pre-made test nodes are useful for backdating.
Managing Updates
Staff Update
The staff page reflects NDI's senior (director-level) staff. Changes in staff require or may require updates of the following pages:
- Our Staff
- Staff member's biography
- Our Teams
- Field Offices (make sure to encode new email addresses)
When removing staff members, unpublish their bio and remove their name from lists using comments so that the information can be retrieved easily if it is needed again.
New or Closed Offices
New country offices require, or may require:
- A new node created with country article, content, and image
- An addition to regional page with introductory blurb (usually a small excerpt from country article that helps summarize NDI's activity there)
- Update to Our Staff
- Update to Field Offices (make sure to encode new email addresses)
- Update to map
When removing an office, unpublish the country page and remove the entry from lists using comments so that the information can be retrieved easily if it is needed again. Some regions have past programs sections. If so, check with staff to see if program information should be moved there.
Democracy Dialogue Update
When updating Democracy Dialogue items in News and Views and Our Perspectives, the most recent item in the list should be added manually to "New Additions" on the Democracy Dialogue page.
Press Releases Update
After adding a press release in PDF form to the site, the PDF should be adapted to HTML and added to the following locations:
- Newsroom, Latest Releases (Delete oldest entry in order to keep list at 5 entries)
- Press Releases ("View all recent press releases" link)
Formatting
Standard Page Format
For country and functional team pages, as well as any pages which may have several main headings for information, a landing page is created in the teaser section with anchor links leading to the different headings in the body text.
EX:
Teaser:
[Intro Text]
Anchor 1 (IE, Current Programs)
Anchor 2 (IE, Past Programs)
Anchor 3 (IE, Contact Information)
Body:
[Intro text]
Anchor destination 1
[Content]
Anchor destination 2
[Content]
Anchor destination 3
[Content]
Important: Make sure to give all pages both a title and parent item in the menu options. Most pages (with the exception of articles and resources) also have a simple descriptive URL path setting.
Contact Info
Pages with contact information sections follow one of two formats:
(1: When contact information is available)
For more information about these programs, use our contact form or contact:
Field Office Location
Staff Member Full Name, Title
+xxx x xxx xxxx (international phone number preceded by + with no parentheses)
Washington, D.C. (always last)
Staff Member Full Name, Title
(202) 728-xxxx
(2: When contact information is not available or should not be listed:)
For more information about these programs, use our contact form or dial our main telephone number: 1-202-728-5500.
Standard Article Format
An article (Democracy Update, Partner Spotlight, In-Country Perspective) should include a description of any included photo as well as a publication date, following the format below:
[Content]
Pictured above: 41 Guinean political party leaders signed the code of conduct on Nov. 21.
–
Published on Nov. 26, 2008
Important: Although articles typically do not have a special URL, you must select the appropriate Site Location category in order for them to display properly on the home page and in their respective sections.
Elections Calendar
Additions to the elections calendar follow the format below:
January 5 | Georgia | Presidential | NDI international pre-election and election day observer delegation and assistance to domestic nonpartisan monitors |
January 20 | Serbia | Presidential | NDI assistance to domestic nonpartisan monitors |
