In partnership with community leaders, civil society organizations, governments, and security service representatives, NDI supports inclusive responses to security challenges in the Liptako-Gourma region of the Sahel by strengthening community cohesion and resilience to violent extremism. The program includes communities in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger and seeks to build trust and improved cooperation among citizens, local leaders, and security forces. The program promotes better inclusion of youth and women in community decision-making processes and improves citizen access to government and traditional justice mechanisms to promote peaceful conflict resolutions at the local level. Training local community members on dispute prevention and conflict-mitigation sustainably strengthens local resilience against violent extremism and promotes peaceful, inclusive community responses to security threats.
