Overview
Since 2011, NDI has supported local civil society organizations in South Korea working toward the shared goal of promoting democracy and human rights in North Korea. These organizations disseminate information into and out of North Korea, conduct advocacy on North Korea’s human rights situation, and document a record of repression of a system that has denied and violated the fundamental freedoms and human rights of North Korean citizens to prepare for transitional justice. Despite limited resources and networks, these groups have sustained critical efforts to increase awareness of, and accountability for North Korean human rights violations.
NDI works with civil society organizations to foster the free flow of information and improve advocacy on human rights and democracy in North Korea by strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations in South Korea to develop strategic content and play a more effective role as an intermediary in gathering, analyzing, producing, and distributing information about North Korean human rights violations.
