Washington, D.C. - The National Democratic Insitute (NDI) released a statement following the announcement that Senator John McCain has been diagnosed with cancer. As chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), Senator McCain has worked closely with NDI to advance democracy around the world. 

“NDI sends our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain," said NDI President Kenneth Wollack. "We know he will fight this illness as vigorously as he has battled injustice globally.”

NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright tweeted the following: 

I'm praying for my friend @SenJohnMcCain. He is my partner in fighting for democracy globally & I know he does not give up.
