NDI Chairman Madeleine Albright issued this statement on the death Saturday of longtime NDI board member Geraldine Ferraro.

"Today I mourn the passing of a great friend and great American, Geraldine Ferraro. Gerry, as we all knew her, was a pathbreaker, not only for American women but also for women everywhere. As the first woman to be a candidate for Vice President, when she took the stage, she changed politics forever. She was a fighter for our dreams and a passionate defender of women's rights and human rights. She was a friend of unparalleled kindness. All who knew her understood clearly that she was dedicated to her husband, children and grandchildren, and it is to them that I offer my deepest condolences."
