Legislative elections are fast approaching in Guinea and political tensions are on the rise. The anticipated May 12 polls will mark the West African country’s first competitive legislative elections, and there is increasing mistrust and suspicion between ruling and opposition parties.  In the past week, politically motivated riots have broken out in the capital, Conakry, leaving many people wounded and several dead.

In northern Central America, where homicide rates are among the highest in the world, lack of security threatens the stability of democratic institutions and often stymies development. Disparities in the way El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras approach the problem make regional security issues difficult to tackle, and organized crime and drug trafficking leaders easily cross borders based on which country has laxer procedures or laws.

Official Kenya Election Results are Consistent with ELOG's Parallel Vote Tabulation

According to its statement on the parallel vote tabulation and observation of the voting process in Kenya, ELOG is confident that the election day process has been generally credible. It calls on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to immediately make public any information relevant and material to the results as announced. More specifically, ELOG calls on the IEBC to make public the individual results from all polling streams.

As many as 14 women politicians from Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, the Philippines and Timor Leste called for bigger and better female political representation and participation in Southeast Asia. The call was made during the regional Women’s Leadership Forum Promoting Women’s Representation in Southeast Asia held in Kuta over the weekend.

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy has appealed to the international community to refrain from sending observers to Cambodia’s national elections in July so as not to lend legitimacy to the poll.

Laura Thornton, resident director of the Washington-based National Democratic Institute, said there was a “disengagement” from international parties that have previously sent monitors to Cambodian elections.
