President Bill Clinton’s advocacy of democracy and human rights has provided vital support to democratic movements worldwide.
His personal diplomacy has facilitated historic breakthroughs for peace and democracy all over the world. From the Middle East to Northern Ireland, from Bosnia to Haiti President Clinton has always been ready to push the process onward when it seemed to have stalled, always ready with alternative suggestions when an impasse seemed inevitable and always ready with a word of personal reassurance. He has acted according to the principle that democracy offers the best guarantee of security and that democratic practice is the surest path to social justice, economic development and global peace. For his tireless efforts in helping people all over the world build more democratic societies, NDI was honored to present President Clinton with the 1998 W. Averell Harriman Democracy Award.
