Susana Villarán de la Puente

The main challenge I faced was to advance assertive public policy in development planning in Lima in areas such as public transportation reform, environment and climate change, the urban planning of Lima to 2035 — and all of this with gender perspective.

Susana Villarán de la Puente is a family educator and journalist, with studies in Social Sciences at the Catholic University of Chile. She specialized in Human Rights and the Rights of Women and Children.

She has extensive experience in public management and work with civic and social organizations. She participated in the creation of the Milk Bottle Program and was an Advisor to the Mayor Alfonso Barrantes in the Municipality of Lima for the implementation of the Milk Glass Program in Lima. She was the Executive Secretary of the National Coordinator of Human Rights and was the Minister of Women during the Transitional Government chaired by Valentín Paniagua that established the Round Table for Combating Poverty, the National Program Against Family and Sexual Violence, and the creation of the Truth Commission. During her ministerial management, she approved the first National Plan against Violence against Women. She is a Member of the Commission for Modernization and Restructuring of the National Police, which created the Office of the Defender of the Police and created the Commission of the Rights of Women Police. Ms. Puente also interacted with the District Citizen Security Committees to implement the National Citizen Security System Law in seven emblematic districts of Perú. She is a member and President of the Party for Social Democracy that later became Social Force, being a member of its Political Commission, from 1999 until the end of 2015.

I am paradoxically a powerful leader . . . And at the same time a victim of political harassment.
