The Sudanese Network for Democratic Elections (SuNDE) has commenced civic education for community leaders in Unity State's three counties of Rubkona, Mayom and Leer, with funding from NDI.

SuNDE has so far facilitated training for local and international NGOs, the United Nations Mission in Sundan (UNMIS), community leaders, the youth and Women's League.

Article 26 of the Iranian constitution provides for civil society organizations (CSOs), stating that organizations are permitted if they “do not violate the principles of independence, freedom, national unity, the criteria of Islam, or the basis of the Islamic Republic.” Subsequently, Iran’s 1982 “Law Concerning the Activities of Parties, Associations, Political Associations and Guild Associations, Islamic Associations or the Associations of Recognized Religious Minorities” outlines four types of allowable organizations.

Twelve young Russian leaders visited Brussles from June 29 to July 3 as part of a study visit organized by the EU-Russia Centre and NDI’s Moscow office. The pariticipants, ranging from 21 to 27 years old, came from the Pskov and Karelia regions of Russia and represented a variety of organizations including political parties, youth groups and a number of NGOs.

Serbia’s First Multi-Party Constituency Office Opening in Novi Pazar| July 7, 2009

Serbian National Assembly Members, Munir Poturak, SDP, Kenan Hajdarević, LDP, and Šerif Hamzagić, G17 plus, opened the first parliamentary constituency office in Novi Pazar on Tuesday, July 7 in Novi Pazar.

The focus of the office is to increase transparency in government and to restore a direct, two-way communication between citizens and MPs. The office will serve to strengthen the connection between citizens and Members of Parliament.

International Workshop Explores Best Methods for Organizing Candidate Debates

In recent years, debates among candidates for local, state and national offices have become an increasingly regular part of elections in a diverse range of countries. Debates promote dialogue around public policy issues, help voters make informed choices, enhance political tolerance and help hold elected officials accountable. Despite the growing popularity of debates and the positive contribution they make to the political process, sponsors must often surmount a range of daunting political and technical hurdles to make debates happen.

Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) launched on Tuesday a Journalists Training Network in collaboration with the NDI.

The Network is aiming to establish a training database for press cadres in all governorates of Yemen, identifying training needs and training trainers.
