Overview

The National Democratic Institute’s (NDI or the Institute) support for democratic development in Malawi began during the country's transition to multiparty democracy in 1994. Since that time, the Institute has provided technical assistance to political parties, parliament, and parliamentary committees, among other stakeholders. NDI has also supported Malawian civil society organizations (CSOs) to conduct voter and civic education campaigns and domestic election observation efforts, including for the upcoming 2025 polls. Since 2019, NDI has worked with youth in civic and political spaces to strengthen their leadership abilities and improve their participation in political processes. NDI’s current programming leverages trained youth leaders to implement civic and voter education campaigns to mobilize youth and other voters to participate and further youth priorities in the upcoming elections. NDI has assisted the National Assembly of Malawi by training new lawmakers and parliamentary staff to enhance their understanding of the parliamentary process and improve communication and efficiency in committee operations. NDI is supporting the National Assembly’s and civil societies' efforts to enhance transparency in line with Malawi’s efforts under the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
