The Malawi Election Support Network (MESN), a coalition of 75 civil society organizations, has issued a second interim statement on Malawi’s May 19 presidential and parliamentary elections. The goal of the organization is to help promote public confidence in the elections through its observation of the voting and counting processes.
With technical assistance from NDI and support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), MESN established a nationwide structure to recruit, train and manage 800 polling day observers to carry out a statistical-based monitoring exercise to identify trends in the voting and counting processes and evaluate the integrity of the results. Additional comment from the organization is expected after official results are announced.
