In Congressional Testimony, NDI Stresses Election Process In Afghanistan

Despite delays caused by investigations of fraud in the aftermath of Afghanistan's Aug. 20 elections, the process should be allowed to run its course so that the government that eventually results is viewed as legitimate by the Afghan people, Peter Manikas, director of Asia programs at the National Democratic Institute (NDI), said in testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Middle East and South Asia.

Slovak Local Elections

The December local elections in Slovakia resulted in a significant increase both in the number of municipalities in which Roma ran as candidates and the number of Roma candidates elected to local office. This increase is in large part due to direct candidate training and recruitment by NDI and its program graduates, as well as the increased attention paid to the need for Roma political participation.

Amid the blight that is Afghanistan's ongoing election fraud scandal, there is a bright spot: the August presidential and provincial council elections showed that more Afghan women than ever participated in the political process.

NDI tracked female participation in all aspects of the Aug. 20 elections. Its findings were discussed during a Sept. 18 presentation, titled: Afghanistan: The Participation of Women in the 2009 Elections.

Women Candidates Prepare for Legislative Elections in Guinea

A poor and vulnerable segment of the population, women in Guinea who aspire to leadership roles face a steep climb. The literacy rate for women is only 18 percent, compared to 42 percent for men, and in the last civilian government, women occupied only 19 percent of the seats in the national assembly and 15 percent of positions at the ministerial level.

But with legislative elections scheduled for early next year, NDI is working to help a great number of these women overcome the odds to become elected leaders.
