"Former Canadian prime minister Joe Clark, part of a team of election observers in Nigeria, is hopeful that the vote count will run more smoothly than in previous elections — even as a flurry of voting-related deaths are reported in Africa's most populous country.
"Clark, observing a poll in the Nigerian capital Abuja, said on Saturday that the count is still in its early stages. This is the first round in a crucial April election, and voting began at noon local time Saturday in the country of 73.5 million voters."
