Parties Call for Immediate Extension of Political Parties Act and Other Reforms in FATA

Senior level leadership of 10 major political parties unanimously called today for the immediate extension of the Political Parties Act along with major changes to the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) and a number of other reforms to mainstream Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

During day-long discussions at a roundtable forum, the political leaders emphatically agreed that political reforms were fundamental for sustainable peace and development decisions that reflect the genuine needs of the people of FATA.

Montenegro: Key Findings of Public Opinion Poll, November 2008

Former Speaker of Parliament Discusses Democracy in Georgia, New Political Party

The preservation of democracy is key to stability and security in the wake of the August conflict with Russia, former Georgian Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze said at a Dec. 19 briefing at NDI. Burjanadze discussed the importance of strong democratic institutions, free media and an independent judiciary. She expressed hope that the establishment of a new political party launched in October, the Democratic Movement-United Georgia, would provide another constructive opposition voice.
