Bomb blasts tore through two campaign events in northwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing at least 18 people, authorities said, as attacks ahead of Saturday’s national election continued against liberal politicians as well as a pro-Taliban Islamist party.

On June 17th women in Jordan will make history, when at least six women will be elected to parliament as part of sweeping election reforms enacted by King Abdullah earlier this year. Last February, the King added six new seats to Jordan's 104-seat parliament, seats that will be reserved for women as a way to boost their participation in the upcoming elections and in the country's political life thereafter. Women candidates will be placed on a separate electoral list and the six who achieve the highest percentage of votes in their district will be elected to parliament.

Leaders from several democracy promotion organizations testified at a congressional hearing today regarding Kenya’s national elections in March.

Keith Jennings, NDI senior associate and regional director for Southern and East Africa programs, testified April 16 before the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations. Representative Chris Smith, chairman of the subcommittee, presided over the hearing, "Kenya's 2013 Elections: An Effective Assistance Model?"
