30 Years of Working for Democracy and Making Democracy Work

In honor of its three decades supporting those who share a common desire to live in free societies that recognize basic human rights, NDI has published a 30th anniversary report highlighting its work in nearly every corner of every continent to advance the promise of democracy.

The report highlights the lessons the Institute has learned over the years — that democracy is a process not an event, that democracy includes those at the margins, that credible elections matter, that democracy must deliver, and that democracy without women is impossible.

These are just a few of the principles that have become the bedrock of NDI’s approach to supporting aspiring democrats around the world. This work can be frustrating, slow and hard, but NDI believes that the effort to establish a firm and lasting foundation for democracy is as vital today as when we first opened our doors 30 years ago.

“While democracy in the long run is the most stable form of government, in the short run, it is among the most fragile.” — Madeleine Albright, NDI Chairman
