NDI mourns the passing of Honorine Muyoyeta, a member of the extended NDI family, who committed her life to serving as an inspirational trainer and a tireless advocate for women’s empowerment and gender equality. She passed away Oct. 13 in Lusaka, Zambia.
For more than two decades, Muyoyeta taught women across Africa how to run for office, be effective leaders, and fight for women’s empowerment. A native of Zambia, she shared her enthusiasm and advice with women in many countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi and Sierra Leone.
As NDI country director in Liberia and Sierra Leone, Muyoyeta managed legislative strengthening, election and civil society programs, but her real passion was encouraging women to participate in politics.
“All who knew Honorine understood that she was a true heroine for women’s empowerment and gender equality," NDI President Kenneth Wollack said. "She will be truly missed.”
Muyoyeta led by example. In 2010 she left NDI to run for parliament in her home country.
NDI invites those who knew Muyoyeta to share their memories of her and reflect on her legacy. Email memories or messages for her family, or share your memories on Facebook.
