Tunisia's Aswat Nisaa to Receive NDI's 2014 Madeleine K. Albright Grant
NDI announced that it will award its 2014 Madeleine K. Albright Grant to Aswat Nisaa (Women’s Voices) of Tunisia, a group formed after the 2011 revolution to give women a greater role in the country's political life and democratic transition. The organization will use the $25,000 grant to help women run in Tunisia’s 2015 municipal council elections and to support them once elected to promote equal opportunities for women in political, economic and social life. Ikram Ben Saïd, founder and president of Aswat Nisaa, will accept the award on behalf of the organization at a luncheon on May 19 at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

Bosnian Politicians Respond to Citizens
Thousands of people took to the streets in Bosnia-Herzegovina last month to protest government inaction on issues such as unemployment, poverty and corruption in the biggest demonstrations the country has experienced since the war ended in 1996. A group of seven political figures from different parties has taken action by tackling electoral reform, creating a party code of conduct and passing legislation to address corruption. Read more»

Middle East Parliamentarians Visit Washington, Richmond
Seventeen members of parliament from Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia visited the U.S. last month to study legislative operations, including committee work, the appropriations process and congressional oversight. The parliamentary exchange, which brought them to Washington, D.C., and Richmond, VA, gave the MPs the chance to meet with members of Congress, congressional staff, State Department representatives, as well as Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and local Virginia legislators.
