Former colleagues, family members, friends and supporters of the late Geraldine Ferraro gathered in Washington, D.C., Feb. 4 for a screening of a new documentary about the woman who made history when she became the first female vice presidential candidate nominated by a major U.S. political party.

The film followed Ferraro’s life from her childhood in Queens, N.Y., to her career in Congress, her nomination for vice president by the Democratic Party, and her life after the historic 1984 campaign. The documentary featured interviews with former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President George H.W. Bush, former First Lady Barbara Bush,, Senator Barbara Mikulski and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, as well as family members, reporters who covered the 1984 campaign, and Democratic and Republican campaign staff.

“Geraldine Ferraro: Paving the Way,” was produced and directed by Ferraro’s daughter, filmmaker Donna Zaccaro, and explores the impact her life and career had on women in politics. The event was co-hosted by NDI — where Ferraro served as a long-time board member— and the Wilson Center. It was held at the U.S. Institute of Peace. Guests at the event included Zaccaro, Mikulski, Pelosi, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, and former Congresswomen Jane Harman, president of the Wilson Center, and Barbara Kennelly.

“Geraldine Ferraro: Paving the Way,” will premiere March 21 on Showtime.
