What do Madeleine Albright, Kamala Harris and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls initiative have in common? They’re all working toward inspiring the next generation of women leaders (join them). Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls initiative is “...dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves” and changing the world by “being themselves”. Through stories shared via video, workshops and support for women of all ages, Smart Girls recognizes the crucial importance of female voices being heard and strives toward a vision of gender equity - a vision that aligns with that of NDI.
Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls produced two short videos, in partnership with NDI, using pieces of the 2017 Madeleine K. Albright luncheon and much more. The Smart Girls’ videos focus on two strong women leaders: NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright and Senator Kamala Harris, and how their stories and life work continue to inspire young women. The first video follows Secretary Albright’s extraordinary story - from a young refugee to the first female U.S. Secretary of State and world renowned woman leader.
The second short video showcases Senator Kamala Harris and her role as a political powerhouse and mentor for women:
Like NDI’s #NotTheCost video and 2017 International Women’s Day video, the Smart Girls’ videos speak to the complexity of being a woman active in politics - it requires mentorship, support, strength and the ability to break down barriers, no matter how long it takes. NDI is proud to partner with an organization like Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls to create videos to continue inspiring the next generation of women leaders.
