In Memory of Adolfo Suarez

NDI mourns the death of former Spanish Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez, one of the pivotal figures in Spain’s democratic transition. Mr. Suarez was chosen by King Juan Carlos to dismantle Spain’s authoritarian political system after the death of dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975, and to steer the country to democracy. In 1977 he became prime minister after winning Spain’s first free elections in 41 years. Mr. Suarez worked tirelessly to overcome the bitter divisions left by the Spanish Civil War and decades of dictatorship, putting in place a new democratic constitution to protect freedom and human rights and enable political participation by all Spanish political forces.

The example of Spain’s successful democratic transition, in which Mr. Suarez played such a decisive role, helped inspire others around the world to move to democracy, particularly in Latin America. In 1988, Mr. Suarez co-led NDI’s international observation delegation for the plebiscite that led to the end of General Augusto Pinochet’s rule and returned Chile to democratic government.

“Adolfo Suarez’ contributions to Spain and the community of democratic nations were immeasurable,” said NDI President Kenneth Wollack. “NDI was fortunate to benefit from his leadership and we will always honor his legacy.”

Suarez died March 23 at 81.
