NDI expresses deepest condolences to the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince on Tuesday.
"The people of Haiti are our neighbors. They are hurting and need our help," said NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright. "Beyond that, words cannot begin to describe the tragedy that has taken place. Assistance is needed now, and will be needed for months and years to come."
NDI has worked in Haiti since 1986 and currently has 24 staff members there. The Institute is thankful that a number of them are safe and is working to determine the whereabouts of the others.
NDI has established a team in Washington to coordinate the Institute’s response to the evolving situation and communicate with others working in Haiti, including the State Department, the United Nations and a range of nongovernmental and international organizations.
"Our hearts go out to the Haitian people in the face of this tragic event," NDI President Kenneth Wollack said. "On behalf of all the many friends of Haiti at NDI, we express our solidarity and support in the face of this terrible disaster."
Given the scope of the disaster and the serious losses it has created, the Institute is establishing an "NDI Haitian Staff and Family Disaster Assistance Fund." Contributions may be made by following this link»
