Washington, D.C.- The National Democratic Institute (NDI) mourns the loss of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a dedicated public servant, tireless advocate for mental health, and steadfast champion for democracy and human rights. Mrs. Carter played an indelible role in shaping the fabric of our nation through her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others, both at home and abroad.
Mrs. Carter’s dedication to promoting democracy and human rights extended far beyond American borders. Among her many activities, she joined NDI and The Carter Center in observing elections around the world, providing advice to delegation leaders, engaging with electoral stakeholders, and taking time to speak with numerous people while observing polling stations.
“Rosalynn Carter was a true trailblazer, exemplifying grace and humility in her tireless pursuit of a more just and compassionate world. Her unwavering commitment to advancing democracy, human rights, and mental health has left an indelible impact on our society” said NDI’s Board Chair, Tom Daschle. “We will forever be grateful for her leadership, and her partnership with NDI.”
NDI joins millions of people around the world in sending our sympathies to President Carter and the entire Carter family as well as everyone at The Carter Center. Mrs. Carter’s enduring legacy will continue to inspire our work as we strive to strengthen democratic institutions, promote gender equality, and empower marginalized communities.
