Thursday, May 20, 2021

On May 18, founding NDI board of directors member and long-time board secretary Marvin Weissberg passed away at age 94, surrounded by his family. Marvin had served on NDI's board for many years, and was an outspoken advocate for human rights, human dignity and progress.

“Marvin contributed in many essential ways to NDI from its inception, from joining the Institute’s initial visit to countries in Africa, to participating in election observation missions, including in difficult countries like Azerbaijan, to supporting programs focused on women’s political leadership,” said NDI Chairperson and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. “We will greatly miss his warmth, energy and friendship.”

Marvin continued his support for the institute in the years since he retired from the board. Throughout his business career, Marvin was an untiring advocate for human rights and racial equality in the United States and around the globe. In addition to his efforts through NDI and the Weissberg Foundation, Marvin supported international scholarships and internships, and was active on the boards of several foundations and progressive organizations.

"Marvin was a core member of the NDI family from its earliest days," said NDI President Derek Mitchell. "We mourn his passing, but cherish the legacy he leaves behind for the cause of democracy and freedom everywhere."

“Marvin’s life serves as an example of commitment to democratic empowerment,” said NDI’s founding president Brian Atwood. “He was a good friend to us all.”
