As Senator John McCain Steps Down as IRI Chairman, NDI Recognizes His Decades of Service to Democracy
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As U.S. Senator John McCain announced he is stepping down as chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI), the National Democratic Institute (NDI) recognizes his contributions to democracy around the world throughout his 25-year tenure. U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska will assume the IRI chairmanship in McCain’s place.
"Senator McCain has been a stalwart partner working with NDI to advance our shared goal of supporting freedom and democracy worldwide," said NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright. “As chairman, Senator McCain always understood that our country is stronger when Republicans and Democrats work together to advance America’s interests and defend the fundamental principles that protect the rights of all citizens. Traveling with him on joint delegations gave us the opportunity to show what America is all about. He is a great personal friend. I wish him and his family the very best.”
"NDI looks forward to working closely with Senator Sullivan," added Albright. “While it will be hard to step into Senator McCain’s shoes, Senator Sullivan is a worthy successor. He has a strong record defending democracy around the world as a Marine, a State Department official, and as a U.S. Senator. It has been a pleasure getting to know him and I am very pleased to be able to work with him in this new capacity.”
