Support for Democracy Remains High in Ukraine: Trends in Ukrainian Public Opinion
NDI Ukraine's latest nationwide survey (completed in December 2017) showed several important trends, including growing support for gender equality in political life. For the first time, more than half of Ukrainians (52 percent) support the equal participation of men and women – or more women than men – in political life.
Demand for a fully-functioning democracy remains high and stable (84 percent). This demand is one of several issues that unites supporters of the main political parties as well as Ukrainians across the country. Demand for EU and NATO membership also remains stable at 55 percent and 40 percent respectively.
Ukraine's political landscape is complex and dynamic. Positive attitudes towards most of the main political parties have dropped since July 2017. In addition, the number of Ukrainians who do not feel positively about any political party has increased by 15 percent. The ratio of optimists and pessimists remains 1-to-1, but both have increased since July 2017.
