NDI Report on Albania's June 2017 Parliamentary Elections

A partisan boycott threatened Albania’s 2017 parliamentary elections until an internationally brokered agreement paved the way for the opposition’s participation in the vote on June 25. The incumbent Socialist Party (SP) of Prime Minister Edi Rama won a single-party majority, with 74 seats in the 140-seat parliament. The opposition Democratic Party (DP), led by former Tirana mayor Lulzim Basha, suffered a loss in votes, and returns to parliament with 43 seats.

Audit of Political Engagement in Albania

NDI's local partner, the Institute for Mediation and Democracy (IDM), conducted an Audit of Political Engagement in Albania, an inaugural public opinion study that explores citizens’ engagement in democratic processes as an indicator of the health of a society. The February 2016 study involved interviews across Albania with 1,538 participants over 18 years of age, as well as four focus groups.

NDI Research: Albanians Want Economic Opportunity and Rule of Law

TIRANA, Albania – Concerns over unemployment, high prices and tax burdens were voiced by Albanians who participated in focus group research conducted by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) last December.

These immediate concerns offset the majority of participants’ assessment that Albania is generally heading in a positive direction.
