Abuja, Nigeria - Today, the joint international observation mission of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) released its preliminary statement on the Nigerian gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections, which took place on Saturday, March 9.

Abuja, Nigeria - The International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) announce the arrival of their joint international election observation delegation to observe Nigeria’s gubernatorial and state assembly elections on March 9. The 20 member delegation arrives in Abuja today. The delegation has received accreditation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the March 9 elections.

This preliminary statement is offered by the international observation mission of the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) to Nigeria’s February 23, 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections. The 40-person mission, with members from 19 countries, was co-led by: former Vice President of The Gambia, H.E. Fatoumata Tambajang; NDI President, Ambassador Derek Mitchell; and IRI President, Dr. Daniel Twining.

Traditionally, political party programs have focused on providing various forms of technical assistance to party activists and leaders. However, without strong incentives for change, greater organizational capacity alone rarely leads to more inclusive, responsive, and accountable political parties. As a result, assistance providers have started to supplement technical assistance to parties with interventions to incentivize more responsive, inclusive, and accountable parties.
