For a country that has not witnessed national elections since 2014, municipal elections are an important way for many Libyans to make their voices heard within their communities and participate as active citizens.

In April 2021, the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and its partner, the Libyan Debate and Dialogue Association (DDA), organized a National Schools Debate Championship in Tripoli, bringing together students from across the country to compete in debates on the national stage.

In honor of Women’s History Month, NDI-Libya is proud to present profiles of Libyan women who have made an impact in NDI-Libya’s programs and their respective communities. These women have demonstrated exceptional courage in their plight for peace, equality, and human rights – often risking their lives and making tremendous sacrifices. These eight women are recognized for their powerful roles in Libya’s transition toward reconciliation and stability

Since the landmark establishment of universal suffrage in 1944, elections have been a pillar of Jamaican democracy. To safeguard this legacy, democracy watchdog groups have remained vigilant, preventing a return to vote rigging, political intimidation and violence that undermined past elections.
