Since 2014, Russia’s engagement with Africa has increased significantly and includes activities in the information space, illicit political financing, the security sector and extractive industries that threaten democracy on the continent. This report outlines four scenarios for how Russia’s involvement in Africa may change from 2023 to 2025 as a result of the costly war on Ukraine. 

Namibia’s Independence: NDI’s support for building multiracial democracy and ending the white supremacist system of apartheid started in Namibia, where South Africa, in defiance of United Nations resolutions and International Court of Justice rulings, illegally imposed its colonial apartheid administration. 

Since 2020, NDI has supported youth in the Southern and East Africa (SEA) region to enhance their political participation through the Political Party Leadership Institute (PPLI) program.

The Russian government has stated that Africa is integral to its foreign policy, and current trends point to expanded Russian engagement to offset sanctions and enhance its global profile. The Kremlin gains influence through governance gaps – especially corruption and insecurity – in various countries on the continent, working with domestic elites for mutual gain.

Around the world, humanitarian crises and disasters have deepened pre-existing inequalities that marginalized populations, particularly people with disabilities, experience. Despite comprising more than 15 percent of the global population, people with disabilities are often excluded from crisis response and recovery efforts as well as broader policymaking processes.

In support of NDI’s commitment of strengthening young people’s impact, influence and leadership, we are highlighting the essential work of our youth-led partners. These leaders are fighting at the forefront for the inclusion of young people in decision-making processes and the elimination of barriers to political participation for young people in all their diversity.

Nonpartisan citizen observers play an important role during elections by raising public confidence in the election process, deterring electoral malfeasance, exposing irregularities, and providing citizens with important information concerning the integrity of elections.
