After nearly 15 years of delayed national elections and longstanding political divisions among factions in the West Bank and Gaza, citizens will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the anticipated legislative council and presidential elections, respectively scheduled for May 22 and July 31, 2021.

During the 22-year rule of former Gambian President Yaya Jammeh, dubious voter registration processes contributed to election outcomes that lacked credibility. Now, with the first presidential elections under President Adama Barrow taking place in December 2021, an accurate voter register will be critical in ensuring credible and representative polls.

In particular, democratic parliaments that have embraced open governance understand that people must be at the heart of parliament and that governance must be responsive to citizens.

It is our hope that the security of the IDPs is at the top of the agenda of both the government and rebel forces to ensure that humanitarian agencies are able to provide assistance without any obstruction or fear for their safety. The onset of the rainy season remains our major concern because it threatens the lives of IDPs. The first heavy rainfall resulted in flooding and the collapse of temporary shelters of IDPs at many camps across the nation.

Political gridlock, partisan stalemate and ideological tensions that go years back. Isn't that far too often the situation in the political landscapes in today's world? Lack of unity and locked positions tend to overshadow the real need for change. But maybe we are witnessing something new happening. Climate issues can actually pave the way for a cross-party culture.
