Since 2004, NDI has partnered with civic and political organizations in Tanzania to support and strengthen democratic development efforts. As a part of that goal, NDI has worked with citizen observer groups to promote electoral integrity in the 2010, 2015, and 2020 general elections. The Institute has also supported political parties’ internal organization and election preparation through its regional program activities.
Since 1993, NDI has supported Kenyan efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and advance democratic reforms, including political party development and dialogue, issue-based policy development, women’s inclusion, youth engagement, citizen and international election observation and political and electoral reform initiatives.
In a historic election on December 1, 2016, Gambians elected Adama Barrow as president, ending over two decades of autocratic rule under former military leader Yahya Jammeh. As Gambians work to dismantle the legacies of authoritarian rule, and NDI is working closely with government, political party, and civil society actors to build democratic institutions that are transparent, accountable, and responsive.
