UKRAINE'S SECOND FRONT: AN ASSESSMENT OF THE POLITICAL AND CIVIC LANDSCAPE FOLLOWING THE OCTOBER 2014 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS

Today, we honor the resilience of Ukraine’s democracy under the active threat of its autocratic neighbors and celebrate Ukraine among our community of democracy and human rights defenders working to support human dignity and freedom worldwide.

On June 21, the National Democratic Institute (NDI) held its fourth bi-annual roundtable discussion “Democratic Challenges and Opportunities Facing Ukraine” in Kyiv.

Approaching the one year anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked and illegal full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainians remain committed to Ukrainian victory and optimistic about the country’s future despite significant hardships. According to NDI polling, 89 percent of Ukrainians report being optimistic about Ukraine’s future, primarily citing Ukraine’s victory as the reason for their optimism.

NDI Ukraine's latest nationwide survey (completed in December 2017) showed several important trends, including growing support for gender equality in political life. For the first time, more than half of Ukrainians (52 percent) support the equal participation of men and women – or more women than men – in political life.

The democratic values that underpinned Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity in 2014 still unite Ukrainians today, according to NDI public opinion research. Ukrainians have little nostalgia for the pre-revolution government, even among those who voted for opposition parties in October’s parliamentary elections.

This statement is offered by a joint international delegation organized by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the European Parliament.

Following Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin announced on September 21st his support for referendums that would be held in four of the country’s regions (oblasts) on the question of seceding and joining the Russian Federation.

Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukraine’s first-round presidential election was competitive and credible, according to the assessment of a high-level delegation of international observers organized by NDI, despite the long-standing need for electoral reforms (download the full statement in English and Ukranian).

KYIV, Ukraine -- The integrity of Ukraine’s Oct. 26 parliamentary elections will depend on Ukrainians taking concerted, proactive steps to compensate for weaknesses in its electoral framework and embracing new political practices, the National Democratic Institute said in a pre-election assessment report released here today.
