In recognition of International Day of the Girl Child, NDI is celebrating the invaluable contributions of young women and girls globally who act as leaders and changemakers in their communities. Despite the persistent challenges preventing young women and girls from participating in civic and political life, NDI partner organizations are creating more gender-inclusive, democratic societies.

Washington, DC  – The following statement was issued by National Democratic Institute President (NDI) Derek Mitchell on the selection of former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Anthony Banbury to succeed William Sweeney, Jr. as president and CEO of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES):

On June 14, 2018, NDI President Kenneth Wollack testified before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. The hearing discussed support for democracy and human rights as an important American value and a core tenant of U.S. foreign policy. The hearing also discussed democratic backsliding and other challenges to the spread and consolidation of democracy.

NDI has taken a leading role in documenting and tackling the issue of Violence Against Women in Political Parties (VAW-PP). Over the past two years, through its No Party to Violence initiative, NDI conducted research with 25 political parties in Côte d’Ivoire, Honduras, Tanzania, and Tunisia. Compiled in collaboration with one of the leading experts on violence targeting politically active women, Dr.

On November 10, 2020, NDI launched the International Working Group (IWG) for Supporting the Advancement of Gender Equality (SAGE) in Nigeria. Leveraging its global experience supporting women’s political participation, and more than 20 years’ presence in Nigeria, NDI began the SAGE project in the summer of 2020.
