To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women and girls in North Macedonia, the National Democratic Institute organized a national survey of women, aged 18 or older. The phone survey, conducted November 21 to 30, 2020, interviewed 1,100 women representing the general population, plus an additional 370 women representing the following categories: women engaged in the informal economy, women business owners of micro-enterprises, women farmers, Roma women engaged in the labor market; and young women with the potential for entrepreneurship. An additional survey was conducted with civil society organizations and institutions that work directly with women on a daily basis, to assess the changing nature of their work. The survey provides insight into the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for women's economic and financial stability, their quality of healthcare access, exposure to gender-based violence, and access to state relief measures.
This research was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and organized under NDI's Parliament Support Programme (PSP). The findings of the survey will contribute to a larger research on the Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Women and Girls, a product of the PSP organized in partnership with the National Council of Slovakia. This research will detail the comparative impact on women and girls in Estonia, Germany, North Macedonia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland.
