Hello, I'm Derek Mitchell, president of the National Democratic Institute, NDI.

I’m honored to address the Kalinowski Forum at a pivotal moment for the future of Belarus. I’d like to thank the Lithuanian parliament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other partners for organizing this incredibly timely event.

I’m recording this message several days before you’ll see it. Much may have changed in Belarus between now and then. Events on the ground are moving quickly.

Statement from NDI President Derek Mitchell on Belarus

NDI condemns the recent non-democratic elections, intimidation and repression of candidates, election observers, and independent media, and the continuing violence against peaceful protesters in Belarus. We stand with the Belarusian people in their demand for free association, free assembly, free speech, and free elections. Belarus best protects its sovereignty and independence by allowing its citizens to exercise their democratic rights. NDI joins the U.S.

NDI mourns the passing of Nadia Diuk. A tireless advocate for democracy around the world, Nadia brought a rare combination of scholarly analysis and passionate activism to her role as senior advisor at the National Endowment for Democracy. Among her legacies are the thousands – perhaps millions – of democrats in Europe and Eurasia whom she empowered with her vision and determination. Ukraine was a special concern and focus of Nadia’s enormous talent.
