Pre-Election Delegation Assesses Electoral Environment In Bangladesh

An NDI delegation has urged election officials in Bangladesh to ensure a more impartial electoral environment for parliamentary polls expected on Dec. 18. In a statement, the delegation called for relaxed restrictions on domestic election monitors, greater protection for minority voters, and the lifting of an ongoing state of emergency.

U.S. Commission Aids Countries Seeking Debates of Their Own

In addition to sponsoring the U.S. presidential debates, the U.S. Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) has partnered with NDI to assist groups in dozens of countries seeking to establish debates of their own. In a publication distributed to attendees at the U.S.

Improving communications between members of the Assembly of Kosovo and voters is the goal of the more than 10 constituency offices established around the country since 2005, including the recently opened office in Kosovo’s capital, Pristina. Following three decades of civil war, Angolans went to the polls Sept. 5 for the first time in 16 years. The parliamentary elections unfolded in a largely peaceful manner, much to the credit of citizens who came out in large numbers, political parties that encouraged members to adhere to a strict code of conduct, and local election monitors who were deployed throughout the country.

The tribal violence that often erupts in remote areas of Yemen undermines order and government institutions and provides a haven for terrorist activity, poverty and illiteracy. These areas, vast and almost inaccessible, and the commonplace killings and hopelessness among populations stuck in a vortex of tribal conflict were characterized in a 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning series in The Washington Post.

As co-editor of the recently published book Semi-Presidentialism in Central and Eastern Europe, Sophia Moestrup, NDI senior program manager for Central and West Africa, examines the effects of “semi-presidentialism,” on democratization in the region since 1990. “Semi-presidentialism” – a regime situation where there is a directly elected president as well as a prime minister responsible to the legislature – exists in more than half of all Central and Eastern European countries.

In her role, she works with political parties and civic organizations to promote public input in the policy process and increase interaction between citizens and their elected representatives.
