Joint Statement by IRI and NDI on Upcoming Elections in Ghana

Washington, DC – The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) issued the following statement ahead of Ghana’s general elections, scheduled to take place on Monday, December 7, 2020:

After five electoral cycles, Bougainville has proven its political and social will to conduct peaceful elections. Recognizing the historic importance of the 2020 general elections, voters held high expectations for a well-planned and successfully executed election as they turned out to elect the body that will negotiate the region’s independence from PNG. Moreover, the elections presented an opportunity to support greater political participation of women and promote their inclusion in the process for independence.

In the local elections held on November 15, after 20 years in power in Sarajevo Canton and Banja Luka, SDA (Party of Democratic Action) lost most of the mayoral positions in Sarajevo Canton municipalities. SNSD (Alliance of the Independent Social Democrats) also lost the mayoral position in Banja Luka. It should be noted that those parties would probably keep the majority in the local assemblies in those municipalities, but the victory of opposition mayoral candidates could be understood as the beginning of a new political paradigm in Bosnia and Herzegovina as a whole.

On December 7, 2020 Ghana will hold presidential and parliamentary elections, the eighth since the start of the Fourth Republic. The International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) offer the following analysis of the pre-election environment based on in-depth interviews conducted October 20–29 with a wide array of representatives from the Electoral Commission (EC), political parties, the security sector, civil society organizations, and citizen observation groups.
