Liberia International Election Observation Mission

Overview

The 2017 national elections in Liberia represented a milestone in the history of Liberia as the country witnessed the first peaceful transition of power from one elected president to another. The elections also ushered in a historic level of newly elected representatives to the Liberian House of Representatives.

NAIROBI, KENYA -- The National Democratic Institute (NDI) announced that it will deploy an international election delegation to Kenya to observe the August 8 general elections.

The delegation will conduct its assessment in accordance with Kenyan law and the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. Leading NDI’s international and bipartisan mission (in alphabetical order) will be:

This statement is offered by an international delegation organized by the National Democratic Institute (NDI). The delegation’s purpose was to accurately and impartially assess electoral preparations in advance of the October local elections; review the broader political environment; examine factors that could affect the integrity of the electoral process; and offer any recommendations that could advance dialogue and consensus-building toward peaceful, credible elections and public confidence in the process. In August, NDI will deploy a team of long-term observers.

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) organized a pre-election assessment mission to the West Bank and Gaza from April 25 to May 7, 2017, in advance of local elections scheduled for May 13, 2017. The mission aimed to produce an addendum to the Institute’s original pre-election assessment conducted from August 24 to September 1, 2016, in advance of the subsequently postponed October 8 local elections.
