Statement by National Democratic Institute President Derek Mitchell on Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos
The verdict by a court in the Philippines to find journalists Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos guilty of “cyber libel” is a tragedy for democracy and freedom of the press. This action is sadly the latest in a string of troubling moves by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s government to silence independent journalism and attack the foundations of a free society.
