Toward the Development of International Standards for Democratic Legislatures: A Discussion Document for Review by Interested Legislatures, Donors and International Organizations
Prepared by the National Democratic Institute (NDI), this document is intended as a basis for discussion within the international community regarding standards for the functioning of democratic legislatures. Just as there is no single, international body that certifies the democratic nature of a given electoral process, there can be no one arbiter of whether a legislature functions properly.
Slovak Local Elections
The December local elections in Slovakia resulted in a significant increase both in the number of municipalities in which Roma ran as candidates and the number of Roma candidates elected to local office. This increase is in large part due to direct candidate training and recruitment by NDI and its program graduates, as well as the increased attention paid to the need for Roma political participation.
