NDI Honors Civic Innovation at 30th Anniversary Dinner

In celebration of its 30 years of strengthening democracy around the world, NDI honored a group of civic innovators at a Dec. 10 dinner and awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The 21 government officials, political leaders, entrepreneurs and civic activists from 13 countries are at the forefront of efforts to use technology to expand opportunities for citizen participation and to make governments more transparent and accountable.

Nelson Mandela was a global force for freedom and human dignity. His passing is a time for sadness but also for renewed recognition of the example he set of courage, humility, perseverance and personal sacrifice as he led South Africa from apartheid to democracy.

NDI Election Reform Mission Arrives in Cote d'Ivoire

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is fielding an international delegation at the invitation of the Ivorian government to assess preparations for Cote d’Ivoire’s 2015 presidential election. The group, which will arrive Dec. 8 and is being welcomed by all Ivorian political parties, includes political and civic leaders, and election and regional experts from North America, Europe and Africa.

Despite numerous challenges, Tunisia’s transition to democracy remains on track, said Les Campbell, NDI’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, in congressional testimony Dec. 4. Speaking before the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, Campbell said, “There is a growing perception in Tunisia that the world has lost interest in this important democratic experiment.

Jack Dorsey, chairman and co-founder of Twitter, and Samantha Power, U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations, will be among the speakers at the National Democratic Institute’s Democracy Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 10, in Washington, DC, which marks the Institute’s 30th anniversary.

The Board of Directors and staff of the National Democratic Institute mourn the passing of Gene Eidenberg, a long-time Board member and friend who, for more than 23 years, brought his intellect, integrity and passion for democratic politics to the mission and work of NDI.

“Gene loved politics,” said NDI Chairman Madeleine Albright. “He did not disparage the practice of politics; rather, he embraced political action as an avenue to represent the views of ordinary citizens and respond to their concerns, hopes and aspirations with tangible results.”

Despite the slow pace of Libya’s political transition and continuing security concerns, a new public opinion survey reveals that Libyans remain optimistic about the country’s future even though they believe the government’s performance is poor and they voice growing dissatisfaction with Libya’s elected legislature, the General National Congress (GNC.) The survey also details citizen’s opinions on the development of Libya’s new constitution, the status of women, and views on Libyan

A revision to Nicaragua’s law on municipal elections last year required political parties to put up equal numbers of women and men as candidates for mayor and city council. It also increased the number of city council seats in each municipality. The result has been more women than ever winning races for mayor and city council.

One of them was Antonia Rizo, a city councilor in San Sebastian de Yal. “When I arrived at my position, I was afraid to speak,” she said, because of lack of familiarity with the city’s legal system.

And she was not alone.

NDI Welcomes New Board Members

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) announced today six new members of its Board of Directors.

One year after the election of Libya’s General National Congress (GNC), citizens there are expressing increasing frustration about the country’s persistent insecurity and want leaders to address that issue, according to a new public opinion study conducted by NDI. The study reveals a widespread belief that a proliferation of weapons, lack of security, partisanship and corruption are holding back Libya’s political transition.
