Political parties are a key institution in democratic practice, yet they face a crisis of representation, with recent research showing that as many as 78 percent of citizens in some countries do not identify with any political party. Many citizens view them as inaccessible and unresponsive to their concerns.

“As a new democracy, Armenia faces a long road ahead,” said Ambassador Derek Mitchell, President of the National Democratic Institute, at the conclusion of a visit to the country. “But it’s clear the country already has at its disposal an abundance of ingredients for success. Chief among these are fresh democratic energy from a new generation of leaders, an increasing number of politically-active women and youth, and the support of the international community of democracies.”

In 2010 and 2011, NDI helped convene stakeholders from across Mexico to ensure that legislation promoting women’s political participation would be enacted. Civil society activists, government representatives, academics, and women from leading political parties came together in a coalition for “2% and More Women in Politics,” to develop and advocate for a regulation to promote enforcement of a provision in the federal election code that designates 2 percent of federal political party funding for women’s leadership training.

This publication provides detailed guidance to activists on discussion, instruction and advocacy regarding women’s political participation in Cote d’Ivoire. It provides context on the current state of women’s involvement in the Ivoirian political sphere, as well as important data to facilitate effective advocacy action.
