Citizens At-Risk of Social Exclusion Expect More Transparency, Accountability and Support from Parliamentarians, Believe in Civic Engagement and the Importance of Advocacy Groups

Citizens at risk of social exclusion expect parliamentarians to solve their problems, produce quality laws and oversee the work of government while broadening the economic opportunities for citizens. Almost all focus group respondents have negative perceptions of the work of the Parliament. The strongest associations are: “circus,” “lies,” “theater/acting” and “legislative house.”

Qualitative research was conducted on behalf of NDI by GfK Skopje with financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The data was collected through 12 group discussions in six municipalities and the City of Skopje from September 15-22, 2017 with a sample of 86 citizens from the Republic of Macedonia at-risk for social exclusion, e.g. unemployed, Roma, women, youth, persons with disabilities and people living below the poverty line.
